GAME DRIVE #2 PICTURE LINK - SECOND SET

The goal of this morning's game drive was to go to the hippo pool, find a herd of giraffes, and to stop to take pictures of what else in between. It's cold in the mornings, that's why it's so important to dress in layers! As we were driving along the ridge of the Oloololo Escarpment, Jackson kept taking out his binoculars and checking the field below. Something had caught his eye.

After about ten minutes of doing this, he told us he had spotted a rhino. Let's go see it up close! He went over the road bank and hauled butt into the savannah. This is true four wheeling at its best! We soon learned that there's only one rhino on this side of the park and her name is Mary. She's hard to find, so we had gotten lucky!

Mary is 14-years-old, weighs close to 2.5 tons, and since there are no males in the area, she's never had babies. Jackson radioed the other drivers about her, and we had about 15 minutes alone with her before the other jeeps showed up. It turned out to be a "10 jeep rhino!"

After about 30 minutes, we headed to the hippo pool located in the Mara River at the Musiara Swamp. We were high up on the bank, looking down on the river at all the hippos below. They were fun to watch and listen to with their loud wheezy honks! I wanted to catch one "yawning," and I finally did although it's out-of-focus. This was my first day trying to use my camera with the long zoom lens and manual focus.

We were then off to see giraffes and along the way we saw lots of other wildlife - buffalo, impalas, gazelles, grey crowned cranes, and the best pictures of hyenas I've ever seen. These hyenas look so cute -- not the true ugly creatures that they really are! We also saw a male and female pair of ostriches, which for some reason I didn't know they could be found in the savannah. You learn something every day!

We only ended up seeing two giraffes on this game drive. I took one of my best wildlife pictures of one of these giraffes. Make sure to check out the two links above to see all the pictures from Game Drive #2. Enjoy!
