NAMUGONGO MARTYR'S SHRINE PIC LINK

Our first stop on the way to Jinja was here. This impressive Namugongo Martyr's Shrine is the site where 22 newly converted Christians were burnt alive in March 1886 on orders of Kabaka Mwanga II. Artistic works depicting the scenes of this Christian episode can be found on the interior walls of this circular shrine.

Located in the center of the shrine and preserved in glass are some of the remains of one of the martyrs, Kaloli Lwanga. Near the shrine is an artificial lake that forms an unique backdrop for the adjacent outdoor 'church'.

Every year on June 3rd, the country observes Martyr's Day as a public holiday. During this day, thousands of the faithful make a religious pilgrimage to Namugongo in remembrance of the martyrs.
